Headphones not recognized - Ubuntu?

Why could it be that my headphones are not recognized when I plug them into the jack on my laptop? I'm using Ubuntu 18.04.5 LTS.
They are perfectly normal headphones that are easily recognized on other devices.

It is not due to the sound card. The sound always comes from the laptop itself, not from the headphones.

I would now discreetly tap that in the sound setting the output device is still the laptop speaker selected.

You have to tell Ubuntu vmtl to output the sound through the headphones. The PulseAudio Volume Control program is worthwhile for this: https://wiki.ubuntuusers.de/pavucontrol/

Can be installed in the terminal via

sudo apt install pavucontrol

There you can set the appropriate output device for each program.

Many Thanks! This solves the problem.
When I unplug the speaker, however, the VLC media player does not recognize it and does not automatically switch to the internal notebook speaker. Does this have to be reset every time you change?

If the two run on different devices, apparently they do. But you have to say that ubuntu 04/18 is already outdated, you should slowly switch to 04/20. I don't have the problem in newer versions of Pulseaudio 🤔
