I wanted to upgrade my dad's laptop (DELL Latitude E6510). He bought the device cheaply from internal company sales. However, the laptop only has 4GB RAM, so Win10 does not run (smoothly).
Since I know a little about PCs, I offered to upgrade the RAM, as the device is otherwise very solid (i7 8th Gen etc…). Therefore I bought and installed a 2x8GB kit as a replacement for the currently installed Kingston KF073F-ELD (2x2GB) kit. This is from Mushkin Essentials. Unfortunately, I have no idea of the model number or the like. But the two kits are almost identical. Both with 1.5V, 1333MHz, 204Pin SO-DIMM DDR3. The only difference is that the old kit was a PC3-10600s and the new kit was a 10666, but that's not a problem to my knowledge.
However, the device runs permanently in a blue screen during the Windows boot process.
The BIOS boot process is carried out and the Windows logo appears, but then a blue screen is almost instant. Now I have already tried to reinstall this Win10 with a boot stick for Win10, with which I set up about 20 new devices last week (→ Bootstick works). Even so, the blue screen is still coming.
The funny thing is that the error message is always different. I have already counted 7 different error messages.
That can only be due to the driver, right? After all, the kernel is loaded exactly where the Windows icon appears. Or am I wrong?
Have you tried again with the old memory?
By the way, the Latitude E6510 does not have an i7 of the 8th gen but an i7 of the 1st gen. (I7 870QM)
And if I read that correctly, from the technical data, the Latitude E6510 supports a maximum of 4GB per slot.
Yes the old RAM is running. Of course I inquired and I read that the device supports a maximum of 16GB… But I can't find this source anymore. Maybe I clicked on an advertisement or something like that…
Ahaaa okay, then the dash next to the Q should be missing, because I'm reading 8700M here…
I was just wondering, because I have the successor, the Latitude E6520 and it has an i7 of the 2nd Gen. And then you say the predecessor has an i7 of the 8th Gen. 🙈.
Then it does not seem to support the new memory to have a compatibility problem.
However, I only quickly read the technical data for the release of the notebook.
What you can still try, re-install the old memory and download the latest BIOS update from Dell and install it. It may be that the laptop then also swallows the 16GB.
Yes, I'll try it tomorrow.
Dell is actually quite easy to care for, as far as that is concerned, and the devices are reliable and support a lot of hardware. The BIOS update is definitely worth a try.
Until last year I had a Dell Optiplex 7020 MT, which should only support 16GB RAM, with BIOS update it was 32GB 😁.
And my Latitude E6520, well, it's a generation newer, but it also runs with 16GB of RAM.
So I would say the chances are good. If not, you could, if you can exchange the new RAM, try to get a working memory that is like the old PC3 10600s instead of the 10666. I don't know how far there are compatibility problems.
In any case, wish you good luck. Is a good notebook 😉 and for office, surfing, etc. It is easily enough. If not yet available, an SSD makes the guy a lot faster 💪👍.
Well, good luck first 🍀
Thank you, that sounds good.
Professionally, I only have to do with HP, so I know a lot about that.
I didn't know DELL from the IT aspect until before the small project. But I hope to get the device working properly again, which would be a shame and my father worked on it for several years in the office and has almost an emotional bond with the laptop.
HP is less my world again.
Had to do with every now and then, but found DELL easier.
Oh, it's running again and the emotional bond sounds familiar to me, so I think that's why I still have mine.
