Laptop for studying computer science (university)?

My computer science studies will begin soon. That's why I want a laptop that is suitable for the course. I only want to use it for university and not for playing.

My budget is 500 euro.

He

500 euro is little. It is best to take one with a bad graphics card (maybe even only on board graphics) and put as much as possible into the CPU and RAM. Ideally 16 gig ram or more ubd an ssd as hard drive)

You have to see if you can get that for 500

Mi

Can you recommend one?

He

No, it depends on what you find. It should just be as good as possible. You can find a current cpus performance index at pcgh on the Internet. Go to a two page where you can buy laptops and see all that come closest to your budget. Then look which comes closest to the mentioned requirements sm

As a small hint: the tdp value is important when it comes to the endurance of your battery. The U models are very economical but also more expensive with the same performance.

I would try to get a used Macbook Pro Late 2012 - 2015, install a new battery for 60-80 euro and then you have the best operating system for computer science (Unix certified 👑), the best workmanship and you can also do it 6 -8 hours mobile use.

For IT, I think a windows device would be better at the CAU in Kiel, because we started with batches

Ce

For class only or for gaming?

Mi

For class only

I will probably also assemble a somewhat more powerful PC

I recommend you to get an external HDD if the memory is not enough

He can find out beforehand. But for one semester I would prefer to create a Windows VM on a Mac.

Ce

Respect, i did too

Ce

I love Mac's, everyone, but not for IT or gaming, everything else is divine

gi

Especially for IT in my opinion

He

"then you have the best operating system for computer science" oh god dear heaven

Dell Latitude E7440 | i7-4600U | 14 "
Although it does not cost less than 500 euro but just above it is great for programming.

Here you can find information to help you make your choice:

It is basically true that you can develop very well on Mac because it is UNIX-based (i.e. MacOS), but many universities and high schools rely on Windows programs and some even start with Batch or PowerShell and that's why Mac is for one Computer science studies very unsuitable. A MacBook is also a good choice for other courses.

Better put the money you want to put in the PC into the notebook, then you will get a better device for studying.
