Is it possible that a laptop has viruses / rootkits after a complete hard reset from the It store?

Cr

Please define what a hard reset is for you.

So I gave them my laptop and they said they would install the operating system again from scratch. But I have the feeling that my laptop is running in the background because sometimes it gets loud and hot for no reason. Not overly hot, but something if I only do a Word document, for example

If in doubt, look through the entire task list and google whether the applications for Windows or similar. Belong.

Look what load you have and which program eats a lot of RAM

If the hard disk has been formatted and a completely new operating system is on it without the old data or similar. Is there no virus left?

So, there's malware that is embedded in the boot record. If they only deleted and reinstalled the partitions, the malware is not gone.

MRMINEDE wrote how you can figure out what's going on in the background. It's an effort, but important.

If you have any questions, ask.

Ok, I took a look at the task manager and googled a lot of processes that were eating something and found nothing noticeable so far…

Cr

Hi. Did you have a look at the CPU usage of the processes? There has to be something high, otherwise the laptop wouldn't get that hot.

Where's the laptop on it? Table, duvet, tablecloth, etc?

Are the ventilation slots on the laptop free of dust, hair, other stuff?

So… I didn't find anything that would be conspicuous… Everything that used up really came from Windows. Googled the name of the applications. There was also no one that consumed an extraordinary amount. The laptop is usually on my bed and should actually be free of dirt… Nevertheless, it works loudly as soon as it starts up and gets hot after about 20 minutes…

Cr

Can you briefly say what exactly standing on the bed means?

Does the laptop have a hard drive or SSD?

Which AV are you using?

The next step would be to look at the temperatures of all possible sensors.

Take a look at the HWINFO program.

And, in the Task Manager you have the Resource Manager. There you can look at the resource usage when the system is running hot.

That would be the next steps.
