Which WLAN NAS do you recommend?

I have a PC, a notebook, a tablet and the smartphone. I imagine a central storage location that I can easily access with all devices via Wi-Fi. As a hobby photographer, the main thing is to share my photos, but also other files.

How would you solve that? Can you recommend a reasonable device to me?

That depends on what you want to spend and what the device should be able to do.

When it comes to ensuring that the data is not gone in the event of damage, you should definitely use a NAS with two hard drives so that the data can be mirrored.

If you don't want anything special then your router may have a USB port to which you can connect an external hard drive and operate it like a NAS. That would be enough.

Otherwise the question is whether the device should be accessible externally or only internally.

I would tend to recommend a cloud provider like Dropbox, where you don't have to worry about data backup and you have worldwide access to the files.

Thank you. I looked at the cloud providers. With the amount of data - a few thousand photos - it becomes simply too expensive in the long run.

It would be important that the data is protected against failure and that I can at least access it normally with the PC and laptop via the Explorer in order to be able to work with it. Internally enough.

My Swisscom router supposedly has that too, it just never worked. I connected all kinds of USB storage devices… Nothing.

I could spend up to CHF 500 on it.

So in terms of price, in my opinion, with a NAS you never come close to the prices of cloud services. If you say that it is undesirable for data protection reasons, that would be totally understandable for me.

Just a sample calculation:

Microsoft 365 Single costs 70 euro a year, including Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Outlook, as well as the OneDrive with 1Tb storage space.

If you buy a NAS with a TB you will need:

1 NAS enclosure for around 150 euro

2x hard drives with 1TB, approx. 80 euro

You then have to set up the stuff and consider the electricity costs (even if they are not high).

For the money you can use OneDrive for over 3 years, where the licenses for Word etc. Are still included. And you can access it from anywhere and are also protected against theft / break-in.

Thank you. You're right. Just convinced me to use a cloud service. What do you think about? https://www.infomaniak.com/de/kdrive/preise

Doesn't mean anything to me, but I'm always in favor of local providers instead of tech giants. Cloud storage is also not a particularly complex concept, so you can go to a small company without hesitation.
