Laptop stuck on startup?

My Windows 7 laptop hangs on startup. All that can be seen is that. Otherwise nothing happens.

Listen carefully: is it active on a regular basis? That would speak for a hard drive defect. Did you install an update before (although there hasn't been one for Windows 7 for a long time…)?
