I have Prime since today, can I download ebooks onto my laptop? Do I need an Amazon kindle or Paperwhite ebook reader?
Or go for a tolino shine
You can read the eBooks on your PC, tablet or smartphone if you have downloaded the free Kindle reading app

On a real ebook reader, reading e-books is of course more convenient.
Since Amazon Kindle is a closed system that is unfortunately not compatible with anything else, this is only possible with a Kindle reader, e.g. Kindle Paperwhite.
All other ebook readers: Tolino Pocketbook, Kobo, … Belong to the open ebook system with the EPUB format, which is supported by the German book trade.
Amazon Kindle unfortunately seals itself off completely from the open system, therefore the Tolino, Pocketbook, Kobo, … Readers can't read the Kindle eBooks.
But the Tolino, Pocketbook, Kobo, … Readers have many other advantages over Kindle ;-) E.g. That you can use them to lend to the city library's online library, which Kindle Can't do.
I have an iPad and I use the Kindle app to read the Amazon books.
