I have had my old Lenovo Y50 non touch laptop since 2015.
In the past few years it has become really slow, especially at the start. At the start, he also likes to switch from the lock screen to the password query until you can finally write something.
It's not a big problem, but I would like to know why. Which is not so good that it takes minutes before you can use everything normally.
My approach is to exchange the 1TB HDD for a (Samsung) 1TB SSD. I have a lot of videos and old documents that I don't necessarily want to sort out or delete. So I want to continue to use the old hard drive as an external hard drive (eg with an Icy Box). I also thought of cloning the hard drive, but for example my current one has installed partitions and the operating system. Is there such a thing as a logical clone?
But is it possible to do all that? How can I keep Windows on the new SSD and not on the old one because I no longer use it as the main hard drive?
You can of course clone the hard drive to the new SSD. All necessary partitions are copied. Then you can remove the old hard drive and connect it to me via USB. However, you may also have to consider that the speed problems do not only come from the hard drive. When a device gets older, it is also the performance that can no longer be sufficient for new, current software. If a device with Windows 10 2016 was still running smoothly, it looks very different today with all the components included after all updates. Your laptop may just be too weak.
And of course a badly maintained system or let's say a dirty system can be to blame.
How much ram do you have? And how much of it can be used?
8GB DDR3, usable 6.9.
I have the Lenovo y50-70.
An hdd with an operating system on it is significantly slower than an ssd.
Your plan sounds good and will bring something. Save data beforehand. Clone with clonezilla live USB stick while one disk is connected internally and the other via usb
Would Windows work the same way if I had the clones?
Absolutely. All partitions must also be cloned. Then everything is as usual. At the first start, however, the start would not go as quickly as expected. This is because Windows first classifies the hardware.
Ok then look better for a new ssd on ebay classified ads for 10-50 euro if you search well enough.
