Older MacBook to factory settings, delete everything?

Does anyone have experience resetting older MacBooks?

I have a MacBook Pro from 2011 and it's very littered. Since we have now bought a new, second laptop, we thought we could delete everything from the MacBook and simply reset it completely.

We hope that it will run well again.

I'm just a little worried. Not that it then no longer works or that many functions can no longer be used, maybe no updates are made or the like.

Does anyone have experience or know their way around and could tell us how best to go through with this or whether we should leave it, etc.

Our important data etc. Would of course be dragged onto an external hard drive beforehand.

I have an even older MacBook and resetting it really works easier than it looks.

Important, before you do the following steps: Please create a backup! Backup is the be-all and end-all in case something can go wrong during the installation and you want to restore the original state. Usually everything should work normally!

First of all, you should download the operating system from the Mac App Store, which is still compatible with your MacBook. I mean it's macOS 10.13 High Sierra. If you can't find it in the App Store, please type in "macOS High Sierra" in Google and then click on the link from Apple. There you will be taken to the download page and can download the operating system as normal. Depending on the line, it may take some time.

Once you have done this, you would still need an external medium to install the Mac operating system from this medium. A USB stick with at least 8GB storage is recommended for this. Then you would then have to do the following with the terminal:

https://support.apple.com/...e/HT201372

There, too, follow the instructions for "CreateaInstallMedia". If you need help, just let us know!

Once that is done, you would then have to boot from this USB stick. To do this you would have to turn off your Mac once. After switching on, immediately hold down the "Alt" key and then press the USB stick. It will then boot from your USB stick. There you can reinstall the operating system as usual and format the hard drive!

Looks like a lot, but it isn't.

Hopefully this will all work for you. I'm at your disposal for further questions or concerns!

Thank you very much for the detailed answer! I will try it the days and hope that I can do it.
