Hi, I have a MacBook Air from five years ago.
It works fine but now I had to download Adobe Creative Cloud for the university and apparently my laptop is too old. Whenever I try to download apps like Photoshop or Illustrator, it says "not compatible"… Apparently I need a new update.
However, I downloaded the latest update for my OS X El Capitan, version 10.11.6, and there are apparently no newer ones.
One of my thoughts was to download the macOS Catalina, but does that even help? I would have to delete a bunch of stuff for more storage space and beforehand it would be good to know if that will do anything at all.
It makes sense to update to the next system (macOS Catalina). Because there are not only new security updates there, but also new features. In addition, Apple is pushing you more and more to update, because after a while you can no longer install or update apps (in your case Adobe Creative Cloud).
All you have to do is search for "macOS Catalina" in the "App Store". (

According to Apple, to do the update you need:
12.5 GB free space (OS X El Capitan 10.11.5 or newer)

Oh everything great. Okay then I'll start deleting and then download it, thank you very much!
Gladly, you can also take a USB stick or an external hard drive and move the data to it.
Remember to make a backup when updating!
For me I was glad to have made a backup after an update. Because I had encrypted my hard drive with FileVault and my Mac crashed during the update and the encryption was damaged. I had to reinstall macOS.
Yes, I'll probably have to do that with the stick, because I can't delete 5 Gb from my stuff.
And thanks for the backup tip!
With pleasure G
To update your programs, first go to the apple symbol in the top left corner of the desk, click on it and then go to "About this Mac" below. You will then see "Software update". You click on that and you get to the App Store. Here you log in and look for "Catalina". The Mac then does the downloading and updating of its own accord. You don't need to delete or move other folders and / or files yourself.
It will definitely be worth it, for security reasons you should always use the current operating system version.
It's best to download it in the evening or at night. It usually takes a long time. The computer can do this automatically without you being there.
