Laptop to adapt HDMI to Tv?

I would like to connect the laptop to the TV today.

The laptop resolution is 1680x900 or so.

I mean the last time there was no full screen TV, but below 2 black edges.

Can't somehow set a higher resolution or remove the black edges on the TV? (HDMI)
