I need to write a program for applications on my laptop and save and then send. Have just checked the word office has become chargeable: '(!
who knows an alternative for FREE
Word and Office have always been chargeable, nothing has changed for 30 years.
A good, free alternative is Libre Office or Libre Office Writer.
What does "become"? MS Office has never been free. Always a payment program.
May recommend as a free alternative Softmaker Freeoffice:

I've been working with it for years.
Or buy on eBay a "filed" older MS Office for Slim. I also bought the MS Office 2013 years ago, then for a few euro. Most are the remaining volume licenses of various companies:

MS Office 2016 for 19,99 euro, you can't do anything wrong…
I have been working with OpenOffice and LibreOffice for many years. The latter has replaced OpenOffice on my devices. So far I have not noticed any real disadvantages compared to other office solutions. The compatibility with MS Office was always sufficient for my needs. If you have used MS Office so far, you will have to change over to the operation.
The nice thing about Libreoffice is that it's opensource software. It is also available for Linux and OSX (Apple). As I see it, you have nothing to lose. Download the latest version of LibreOffice and try it out. If you can't cope with it or the conversion is too labor intensive for you, you can still switch to MS Office. Remember, however, that you are dependent on it like many other users in an area of Microsoft where this is not absolutely necessary. How deep the alleged lack of alternatives of MS products is rooted you can see even if you read the answers. I've successfully banished MS Office as well as Windows from our homes, and it works.
