Does an external DVD / CD drive work?

I don't have a DVD drive in my laptop. Because of this, I wanted to ask here first whether something like that is suitable for playing with playing on CD and whether it functions at all. I would be very happy to receive recommendations or an answer to the question whether it works.

Whether something is suitable for playing with games on CD

Yes.

whether it functions at all.

If not defective: yes.

I would not recommend playing directly over the drive unless you only want to play Point & Click. But with most games it is the case that you insert the CD into the drive, but you have to install the game on your internal hard drive (in the laptop) before playing

Yes, all is well.

The data rate is also thick enough for an external CD drive.

Back then I had a CD game where you can only play this game on CD without installing it, and yes it is already playable. It always depends on which game you play and which external CD drive you have. But today's CD games are mostly installed on a hard drive, so I wouldn't worry about gaming.

The basic data rate of a DVD player is around 11 MBit / s, which means that even a 40x reading speed is feasible on a USB 2.0 port with 480 MBit / s, which corresponds to the fastest drives on the market.

so it is not a problem to connect the drive to the USB.
