Migrate data and programs to a new PC?

I want to "move" my data and programs to a new laptop. What is the usual way to do this? Of course, I don't want to just install the old hard drive in the new laptop, as I'm switching to an SSD. Can you just take an image from Windows and then somehow install it on the new laptop? Or is there no easy way and I have to manually copy the data and reinstall the applications?

The whole thing would then be from Windows 7 to Windows 10.

Drag the data to a USB stick and play it over.

Download programs from the Internet or install them from the CD.

You shouldn't do that, because you have completely different hardware, windows can only manage that with contradiction. There are programs like true image, the more expensive version can, I think, also remove drivers etc beforehand and copy them 1 to 1.

for normal mortals you can only try it out, otherwise just make it anew. And export and import everything.

The problem is that the registry entries are missing for many things, so a simple copy paste is not possible. Only setups of the program and corresponding backups help.

Ok, thanks for the detailed answer. In that case it will be a bit more work, but you don't do it every day.

That's right, because you also have a backup on the USB stick if the new laptop goes on strike and may have to be sent in due to warranty. Above all, save the user folder, the programs that should be reinstalled are usually remembered by themselves if they are missing.
