Basically, the laptop is more diverse. With the iPad or any other tablet you are more restricted when it comes to software.
If you only want to write or read with it, it almost doesn't matter.
I'm a big fan of the Microsoft Surface devices, where you can remove the keyboard and it also functions as a tablet. There's also a pen. Then you have a notebook and tablet in one.
