Reset Windows 2000 laptop?

I would like to reset my Windows 2000 laptop so that I can dispose of it. How do I do that? I don't have a CD anymore.

We

Run Linux via USB and on the main drive sudo rm -rf --no-preserve-root. This then deletes all data and the PC can be disposed of.

We

Possibly overwrite the partition with devrandom to be sure.

The easiest and fastest way is to remove the hard disk and dispose of it separately.

The easiest way is with https://www.heise.de/...dban-54943

You can burn this to a CD or copy it to a USB stick and then boot the laptop with it.

Do I have to download the Linux software from another PC in advance and then install it on the 2000 laptop? I don't have an internet connection from the old box… I'm a little overwhelmed with the matter.

And then enter the command via cmd?

I did that earlier. I can't get the ISO file on the laptop…

You can either burn the ISO file to CD. This is explained here:

Or you can copy it to a USB stick, if the laptop supports booting from USB. How this works is shown here:

You don't have to install this on the laptop. You copy the software on another PC with a suitable program on a USB stick or on a CD and then start the laptop with it.

You enter the command in a console. However, this command is not really safe. It only deletes the files. However, it is better to completely overwrite the entire hard disk. The command for this looks like this: "dd if = / dev / urandom of = / dev / hda"

If all of this is too cumbersome for you, you can simply use sdelete. You can find it here: https://docs.microsoft.com/...ds/sdelete

You can then do this under Windows 2000. In a command prompt (CMD). Before that, you have to delete all files that are not part of Windows. Sdelete then overwrites the empty space on the disk to make it impossible to restore the deleted data.
