I have a lot of garbage on my laptop and just wanted to delete everything and then the things I need to re-download. Do I have to create a new microsoft account or reset the pc and importantly I want to keep my windows and not buy a new one. I also have only apps that I need and no pictures, music, etc. I do not know my Microsoft password anymore, does it matter?
You can't lose anything when restoring a node.
If you want to reset Windows to factory settings you have two options.
Either you save the APPs and data or delete everything completely.
In both cases, your laptop does it all alone. It does not take much, but under Windows 10, you can't make a mistake here because it asks you what exactly you want to do.
That depends on the Windows version.
For Windows 10, you can easily go to Settings → Update and Security → Recovery → Reset this PC. You do not lose Windows.
You will not have to buy a new Windows under any circumstances. If your motherboard is not 15 years old, the Windows key is stored on it. This means that even if you completely remove your hard drive and install a new one and reinstalled on this Windows, it would automatically be activated.

You do not need to know the password either. If you reset the PC or reset the operating system, then the connection to your Microsoft account is disconnected (if any).
After the reinstallation you can then connect another (new) account with the PC.
