Win reinstallation despite files on notebook?

I have an old notebook which I can only use with a new installation of Win because I no longer have the password for the user account. What happens to the files when I reinstall?

Va

Then they are all deleted.

My

If you do it right then they're gone.

mi

They are all deleted / overwritten…

If you want to keep the data, you can boot from a CD or stick with a live system such as Linux and save the data beforehand

There are also some options, for example to create an admin account and get back into the system, google is very helpful…

What happens to the files when I reinstall?

If the hard disk is not formatted before the installation, the previous installation is stored in the windows.old directory. So if you want to do a clean reinstallation, you should format the hard drive beforehand.

If you want to keep the old files, I would either trick the login routine with a tool like Kon-Boot or simply boot from a Linux Live CD and copy the files over to another storage medium.

Je

Too bad the KON-BOOT doesn't work for Linux either. But thanks for the tip.

Dr

Kon-Boot only works as long as the system partition is not encrypted. As far as Linux is concerned, any platform should be secure.

Je

How do you create an admin account under Xubuntu?

mi

You had written Windows 10 … And nothing from xubuntu…

Your Google broken?

e.g. https://wiki.ubuntuusers.de/Zugangsdaten_vergessen/

Je

If I do it as it is there (forgot my password) with the command lines in the root terminal "mount -o remount, rw /" and then later "passwd name" the shell only tells me that the user can't be found. Although my user account is shown to me when I boot up normally.

Je

It also does not work if I try as a guest on "Settings> User settings> Users and groups" and then on delete the account that is shown to me here by name.

mi

Is windows now as a system on the notebook as you write?

Then why do you want to change a user to xubuntu?

Je

No Win10 should be on it! But Xubuntu is currently on it and my old user account. But I would like to either be able to save the files somewhere or delete them completely before installing Win10.

mi

So you want to sell / give the thing… Then you have to overwrite the record several times, there's also soft, depending on the record, also from the manufacturer of the record…

If you simply install win druber the data are no longer visible, but can be partially restored with data recovery software

Je

No, I have my own newer one. But the notebook used to be my travel notebook. That's why I wanted to tackle all this stuff with the forgotten password.

Je

Does that mean if I install Win10 over there then install a data recovery program in Win10 and maybe still get some data like photos and write files?

Je

If I install Win10 over it, doesn't everything else on Xubuntu remain in the background and there's less space for Win10 itself?
