Windows 10 updates cause problems?

I was writing an essay, my laptop crashed (my essay probably gone) and the message "Updates could not be set up" kept coming up when I booted up and then it was automatically restarted in an endless loop. I don't want to fix the problem at all; I want to be able to continue my essay as quickly as possible.
