LAN connection to play with XP and a Win10 PC?

Re

A buddy comes over with his old laptop a few times a year (Windows XP) so that we practically have a mini lan party for two with old games from the past.

I have questions about this:

I have a Win10 PC, can I still use a LAN cable? After all, there are some Windows generations difference. Hamachi is dropped because XP should no longer be used on the Internet.
Is it enough to simply connect the PC's with a LAN cable or do you still need a switch?
Would using Hamachi on an XP computer really be too dangerous? And would that also endanger the Windows 10 PC?

XP will still need a crossover cable. Hence better switch.

I don't know what Hamachi is supposed to be.

Re

Hamachi Simulates a virtual LAN connection. The connection is established via their server.

Bi

Why should you do that at a LAN party?

Well, you will already know that.

Re

Because back then (without a switch) it often didn't work so well. With Hamchi, it was usually immediately possible. Would that be too risky with Windows XP?
And is any switch enough? Or does it have to be a certain one? Always read with the things that people connect multiple devices to the internet e.g. The one here: https://www.amazon.de/...000FNFSPY/

It's enough. I do not know Hamchi and do not know whether or not that is "risky". I only know that you don't need this to create a LAN connection.

Re

Ok, thanks anyway.

Hamachi is already a detour. All that does is establish a p2p connection. You can achieve the same with a usable network configuration. At the same time there shouldn't be any problems if the XP computer is connected to the network for a few hours. Just don't surf around with it.

Re

So simply LAN cable + switch?

LAN to LAN is not a problem in itself. However, setting up the LAN in XP to be able to access another PC or that the connection in the game worked in the end cost me a lot of nerves at the time. Now XP was running on both PCs. Maybe you should inform yourself beforehand about connecting via LAN from XP and Windows 10.

Re

Yes, I still remember that ^^ that's why I asked the question here.

Then you also know that there's nothing technically ping better than via LAN. 😄 If everyone goes wrong then Hamachi.
