I think that your adapter is a USB 3 adapter and thus min needs a USB 3 port.
If there's no one on your laptop it is clear that this does not work.
Could you vllt describe what color the cable has in the connection which you plug into the PC?
Otherwise it could be that your adapter requires an active power connection.
Look if your adapter is a small round connector where a power supply connection could fit.
Otherwise look if your adapter is a manufacturer and a serial number. Or try posting a picture here of your adapter.
