Can I get the laptop working again?

My mother recently got a new laptop and I got her old one. The old one should be around 6 years old now, but I'm not sure.

Now it's really slow, not only because it's no longer the newest, but also because my mother treated it really badly. Always memory full, then delete things again, then memory full again. In addition, as far as I know, she never really turned him off but always worked too well and never really gave him peace and seldom made the updates.

I'm now in the process of defragmenting it and see if that brings something. I've already thought about formatting to get rid of all the unnecessary stuff. She said that everything on the laptop can actually be removed.

Is there anything else I could try or is the laptop not even faster to get?

Since it is 6 years old, I can imagine that there's no SSD installed, but an HDD. Depending on how the laptop is constructed, I would swap the HDD for a new SSD. That should help a lot

Resetting it completely to the factory settings is the only thing that might get it going again. Retrofitting an SSD would bring a lot if something new is not to be bought directly.

One possibility is to increase the RAM.

If you reset to factory settings, you should first read out the key and a recovery CD and full backup on an external one
Create HDD.
