Monitor has VGA and HDMI?

I have (unfortunately) again computer science and wanted to connect my laptop with the monitor for the fun of it. Since the equipment of the school is old… Is there only VGA. But strangely, some of the monitors also have an HDMI input. Therefore, my question is: can I connect my laptop to the monitor with an HDMI cable, even if it has both inputs?
