Document camera take a picture and have it read aloud?

My grandma has a rare eye disease and is going blind. It hurts me a lot personally and she loves to cook. There are reading devices available, but these cost well over 4000 euro. I thought if I connect a document camera to a laptop, is there software that can recognize text from bilfer and read it out loud? I know you can have PDFS read aloud.

Shame your grandma is doing so badly. As far as I know, there's no such app (free). There are definitely apps like this, but they are very expensive. I myself know e.g. Ttsreader, but it only reads text you typed out. But equipping a document camera with software so that it reads texts out over the computer will not work quite so well.

Would be willing to pay money too

This is a good article on free apps that can read texts. However, you have to manually scan these texts yourself. After that they can be read out as often as you want. Here is a link to a page, you can read it through ^^. Maybe there's a useful app included

What you are looking for is an OCR. This can recognize texts from PDF files or scanned documents. Almost all scan programs have this integrated. For example, the FineReader is also quite good. If it is already available as a PDF, that works too. But I don't know exactly how to do it with the FineReader. But you can call there if necessary. They certainly have a customer hotline. Have OpenBook myself. But that's another really expensive story. Free OCR programs usually do not help. You want to get something sensible out of it. The quality of the scanned text must also be reasonable.
