I ordered a headset for my Acer laptop for university. When the Trust Reno headset for PC & laptops arrived, I of course connected it to the audio jack. Sound could be heard, the microphone did not work. So I googled that you need an adapter for that. So I ordered an adapter, connected the cable with the pink and green plugs that came with the headset to the adapter and plugged it into the audio jack.
Then I found that the mic was still not working. The only microphone that picks up sound is my laptop's microphone, there's no other microphone to choose from.
I have already tried earplugs with microphones, and the laptop did not recognize another microphone there either.
The headset works fine, e.g. On my tray.
Why is it that the laptop does not recognize a microphone?
The audio connection is only an output in your case. Even with the adapter, only sound is output. An adapter with these two connections which then leads to usb should help.
Do I see it right, you only have one audio jack? Don't you happen to have a headphone jack and a microphone jack? And have you ever tried the included adapter and connected both plugs?
There are two different circuits for the adapters. You probably got the wrong one. Take such a small USB card and it's good. Usually also better sound. Example:
