When would you throw away your old laptop?
Throw away? Only if it were irreparably defective.
If he is just old and I get a new one, I would still sell it
If it really doesn't work anymore and is broken (maybe sell the working parts… Or even repair it). Otherwise: Linux. Works almost always. You can always use old computers.
Not at all, you get one or two euro for it on ebay!
Why dispose when the device is still working.
I still have a 15.4 "Fujitsu-Siemens notebook with a Pentium 4 (3.0GHz) with 2GB Ram, 1280x800x32bit, a game-compatible ATI graphics card (128MB), a 250GB mSata SSD (over 2.5" - IDE adapter) and currently a Win7 (32bit). At the same time, a 32-bit Linux is added (Lubuntu, or MX-Linux).
This is my active reserve system!
Then I have an older highscreen notebook with a Pentium 1 (90MHz), 32MB Ram, 800x600x16bit, ~ 850MB HD and Win95. (=> stored)
I also stored my upgraded Atari Falcon030 (in the AT Big Tower) and my C64 (including accessories).
And a real rarity is my functional Atari portfolio.

I'm a bit sentimental about such technology.
It's all a question of space - if there's enough of it, ok, but before I throw something that works, look better and bring a few dollars to the sale.
I have most of the accessories in moving boxes in the walk-in attic. Only lugging up through the narrow roof hatch was tedious.
But I stowed the sensitive data media in a closet with me. They would break relatively quickly in the attic (due to the temperature).
And I have a small collection of graphics cards in a glass cabinet.
No way. There are stores in every city and there are shops. If they don't want to give you anything anymore, just leave it there for free, or pass it on to your relatives.
that doesn't always have to be about money. It is simply a fact that many families in Germany have a lot of use for an old laptop because the often only PC in the house has to be shared by 6 people.
