I installed an outdated CD-Rom game collection with 25 games on my laptop (Windows 10). The games you can play right away work. However, some games have to be installed again and a game is not fully installed or can't be started. There's already a shortcut to this game on the desktop, but when I click to install / start the game, I only get an error message: Graphics environment could not be started. Make sure DirectX is installed correctly. This is despite the fact that I have already made obsolete versions via the compatibility mode (Win95, Win98 / Me, WinXP). So I downloaded DirectX, but nothing happens when I try to install it. Can someone help?
Your pc has a new version of direct x on it
And can I download an outdated Direct X version or can you recommend a version?
I would not recommend it.
What could happen there?
Or would it work for example on a laptop with Windows 8? Wouldn't Direct X be too new?
The game probably needs an older Direct-X version.
But unfortunately Windows can't be "downgraded" to an older one.
In the case of old software, I think it helps Only a C hard disk to be exchanged with Win7 or Vista or XP
I've also been annoyed that great software no longer runs on Win10.
And would it still work on Windows 8? Or would it be too new?
Again a ready-made answer, but could help you as it explains very well:

It's a lot to read, but think it's worth it.
I have great old audio restoration software that no longer runs on Win10 because of the graphics or Direct X. I then unplugged the C hard drive and plugged in another one and installed an old Windows. Then it happened (by chance). If you know how old the software is (date), then you simply install a Windows from the same period.
But it is important that your PC is not too modern (memory stick, Sata, IDE, 32 or 64 bit - PC etc.).
Because e.g. Some software does not know 64-bit architecture, or the graphics card is too violent or Direkt-X too new or or…
The simplest thing is to put together an old PC, especially for such things.
Basically:
Games and programs that are still written for 16-bit operating systems no longer work on 64-bit systems.
Otherwise, you must also assume that CD / DVD copy protection mechanisms and all driver support are included.
You either need a RetroPC with the appropriate operating system or you are watching z. B. To http://gog.com to see whether there are these games for Appel and Ei there. The games there the copy protection was removed and trimmed to run on current hardware. Yes, the site is legal!
A CD is relatively out of date. You can probably download the game from the Internet.
Where you like simple games. Backgammon is popular in Greece and the south. You play against real opponents.
Microsoft backgammon

It's really fun. In the south you play it for money.

I was ripped off as a professional.
Windows 7 if you're lucky
