What is a good beginner interface + software?

We're currently looking for a good and cheap USB DMX interface that runs without stutters and a suitable good and user-friendly software (lifelong not only annual license). The software should be able to program good shows (ideally with a timeline). The interface should have 512 channels and run on a slow PC or laptop.
