Expand the RAM with a 16 GB USB stick?

I wanted to ask you whether you can expand a laptop with 4 GB of RAM with 16 GB of RAM. Is the? Or is the size of the USB stick too big? And could you also use a USB stick with more than 16 GB to expand the RAM?
