Start a Linux Live DVD from a Linux magazine. The Linux operating system (for example, Mint) is exactly the same as W7, is fully usable immediately after booting from DVD, has all the programs I need and can be used by any beginner. Start the full-fledged Libre Office, go to the Web with Firefox and read your email with Thunderbird.
If all this works to your satisfaction, just click Install on the elegant Mint Desktop. Any beginner can do that.
A license and a virus scanner is of course not needed for high-quality operating systems thanks to GNU / GPL license and intelligent software.
Mint can be downloaded legally in different versions (with about the same equipment) for free. The Cinnamon version is elegant, the XFCE version runs super fast on old hardware. The web is full of information about free Linux - even my children get along fine with it.
The additional installation (besides Windos) is just as easy.
