Old Windows 8.0 key when installing Windows 10?

Windows 8.0 is running on my laptop. Is the Windows 8.0 product key valid when installing Windows 10? You can still perform the update to Win 10 for free using some product keys (according to some sources). If not, is it possible to go back to Windows 8.0 afterwards?
