I want to buy an M2 SSD for my laptop. At the moment there's a built-in HDD that I no longer want to use. I want to transfer everything that is now on my computer (Windows, files, system, EVERYTHING) to my future SSD. Then I just want to have the SSD installed. I should only be able to plug in the SSD and continue as usual.
How can i do this?
It's that simple: https://www.zdnet.de/88381707/windows-10-auf-externe-ssd-installieren/
Isn't this about an internal SSD or have I misunderstood something?
Yes, of course, the external one becomes the internal one.
So you just haven't got it right…
Just reading the headline is clearly not enough!
I have an HDD and want to transfer everything to an SSD
Yep that's how it should be.
Not only did I read the headline and to be honest, I don't know how you came up with it. The comment should actually be a question… Apparently I actually misunderstood something, but that's why I ask ^^ You can't always understand everything correctly.
Does your LT even have an M.2 connection?
Of course, otherwise I wouldn't ask.
For this you need a hard drive case for a normal 2.5 inch hard drive, something like this:
https://www.pollin.de/p/6-35-cm-2-5-festplatten-gehaeuse-usb-2-0-zu-sata-schwarz-721676
… And of course a hard drive that is at least the same size as your current one.
Furthermore, your LT should have a burner and you need a new fresh CD to burn. You put this CD in the burner right away.
First you create a system image file with WINDOWS 10, which is saved on this disk.
When the burn process is complete, you will be asked if you want to create a system repair disc. You answer this question with YES. This data carrier is then created.
After everything is done, switch off the computer completely, remove the built-in hard drive, install the M.2 and reassemble the computer.
Reconnect the 2.5 inch drive, the CD is still there. Switch on the computer.
Since there's no longer a boot drive, the computer searches for another boot medium and finds the CD from which it is now booting. You can now use the tool on this CD to restore the hard drive.
The tool finds the system image file on the connected hard disk enclosure and restores the disk, now the M.2.
After that has happened, the CD is removed from the burner again and the LT is shut down. Unplug the hard disk.
If everything went well, the computer should now start up normally again via the M.2, as it was before.
It's actually quite simple. You register the M2 first as another drive. Then you can use freeware like casper (google it) to mirror the hard drive to the SSD. Once this is done, you just need to disconnect the hard drive and register the M2 as the primary drive in the bios.
Many Thanks!
