Do you shut down your PC / laptop every day?

Eg

To everyone who uses their PC / laptop at home almost every day:

Do you always shut it down while you sleep or do you just put it on standby?

Or do you even let your PC run permanently?

Gu

Unless I have it on permanently when it runs past midnight and is only then shut down

Tr

Always in sleep mode.

It then starts very quickly
He then starts without problems
If you leave your PC running all night, that just draws electricity unnecessarily.

I haven't shut it down normally in years. Sleep is only recommended.

Lo

When I'm away for a short time (max 2-3 hours) I let it go

when i'm only gone for a few days energy saving mode

He goes out for anything longer

Gu

When i'm only gone for a few days energy saving mode

Why not turn it off completely? I mean when you're gone for several days? I just can't understand that😅

fr

I always go down, I have an SSD because it starts up pretty quickly

Tr

True, it doesn't make much difference anymore. The few seconds. Still quite practical if all programs remain open.

fr

Do you still have a hard drive 🤔

Tr

My laptop is from 2011, at that time there were no usable SSDs xD

SSD is also a hard drive, by the way. You think you mean "Do you still have HDD?"

Lo

Because then everything is still there and I don't have to set everything up again after the restart

Gu

What do you have to set up? Opened Internet pages can be saved by several browsers and reopened after a restart. And programs… Well, it doesn't take that long to start

Lo

My oc tools fan control etc.

There's no reason to shut it down completely

Gu

Save electricity and extend the service life of components or not shorten them…

Lo

Well he consumes next to nothing

And the hardware doesn't work either

Ma

I still have a rather old laptop, so I always prefer to turn it off because it has little power but is fine with me

ma

Daily shutdown is not necessary.

You forgot the most important mode…: "Retirement" or "Hibernate"

I put my computer to sleep overnight. This saves a complete memory image on the hard drive / SSD and switches off the power. (As with shutdown). When starting, only the memory image is loaded, which is much faster than booting completely. As with standby, everything continues from the point at which the computer was switched off.

During the day, I prefer the hybrid standby mode because the computer is immediately ready for use and retains the data even if there's a power loss. (In addition to preserving the RAM, a memory image is written to the data carrier in hybrid standby as in retirement. If the connector is pulled for any reason during hybrid standby, the system starts as if it had come out of retirement.

It should be noted that depending on the size of the RAM, the shutdown takes 5.20 seconds! (16GB Ram + .8GB from the graphics card)

If you only have a small SSD, you should do without these two modes.

In addition to the usual swap file (pagefile.sys) of up to RAM size, the memory image (hiberfil.sys) also occupies a lot of memory on the data carrier. If you only have a 64.128 SSD, you can quickly get rid of 20GB without really knowing what for… The files mentioned only appear in the payment when hidden files are displayed.

My computer will only shut down (restart) if an update or something similar has been installed.

And of course when I once again forgot to release the requested memory while programming… (mainly happens with PInvoke system accesses integrated in Powershell, you work without the shell's memory management) … Ergo, the "collection" of system errors in the memory is limited. (Restart = everything at the beginning)

ma

My oc tools fan control…

Wiso you have to set up again after the shutdown? Every well-dimensioned program has the option of saving settings and loading them automatically when starting (if necessary via command line parameters…

You can also use the rest mode. This holds the data even without electricity.
