I would like to buy an original Microsoft Key for 8.1 on eBay for under 10 and upgrade to Windows 10 for free with the Media Creation Tool. Is that possible?

I recommend the upgrade method with the Windows 10 Update Assistant. Then your programs, your own files and settings are retained.

This also doesn't mean that Microsoft won't do anything about it if you don't have a license.
With dne Windows 10 Keys on eBay you can't go wrong, just make sure that the seller has good reviews and offers PayPal (then you can turn on buyer protection if necessary), so I always do it, I also buy Windows 10 Keys more often from eBay and had no problems with it yet.
