Opinions on tablets, cell phones, laptops in class?

In some schools a lot of digital devices are already used, but in general Germany is quite far behind when it comes to digitization in schools. Would you personally be in favor of integrating cell phones, tablets, etc. Into the classroom? And why?

So I would be for it. I would be interested in the opinion of others on this topic!

Ne

I find this and the infrastructure to be incredibly expensive, which is not justified by the benefits if it is actually introduced generally and for daily use.

The possibilities are 'nice to have', but not 7 school hours a day for 10 million students!

Why not?

But only with devices that are provided by the school with a uniform and unchangeable configuration.

I'm unable to decide on any of the four positions mentioned: One may see an advantage in the total digitization of teaching, as it will result in even more illiterates or semi-alphabets than there are already in our society, others may see this as a disadvantage. There's no doubt that the digitization of teaching will lead to a further division of society into educated, uneducated or semi-educated.

Did you say the same thing when the first people wanted paper instead of slate for the students? πŸ˜…

I go to a school where we have iPads and we use them. But that does not mean that the lessons only take place "digitally". With us it is like this:

There are teachers who use OneNote to store their teaching materials there, others only so that we can research things in certain tasks. In music, we can use Garage Band when we need more instruments than keyboards.

Example: When the lesson begins, the teachers roll the iPad cases into the room and everyone can take an iPad. Then we have to log into Microsoft and open the topic or sample solution from the previous task in OneNote. Then we process the tasks either directly in OneNote or on a sheet of paper. I personally prefer the sheet of paper. After the lesson, the iPads have to be sorted and disinfected (due to Corona) and packed back into the suitcase.

Then there are two types of students:

1) Those who write and work on everything in class on their personal devices and

2) those who still write everything on paper.

The good and at the same time bad thing about private devices is of course that you can surf the Internet for free using the school Wi-Fi and google things quickly. Or you paint in class, like my best friend. Or play games like another classmate. All of this is difficult to prevent and I admit that I would also draw on it in class if the opportunity arises - at the moment I only do it on paper, which is sometimes quite a waste of paper.

We're not allowed to use cell phones and it is of little use because they are already quite small - you understand?

In addition, not every teacher uses the iPad in every class. So why should he rent / register them specially in the secretariat if he doesn't need them at all? But another class, which no longer has iPads, since everyone has already left (as far as I know, this has not happened yet).

Before anyone asks: I'm at a private school, a grammar school - even if that doesn't mean anything - with around 500 students. In total there are between 180-280 (plus minus, I'm not exactly sure) iPads at our school, almost every one of which is used in different ways every day.

As stated above, I don't care if we use iPads or not. I have nothing against them, but I prefer to use my paper because I can then concentrate better. Sounds strange, doesn't it?
But there are too many things on the iPad that could distract me. In addition, we also have a smartboard in each class, division and course room, with which you can also go online. Provided it works - not as it is in my classroom at the moment πŸ˜‘

Are there any questions? πŸ˜‚πŸ˜…

Ja

I would be in favor of a reasonable mix. Notes from the blackboard in particular could be useful for re-learning (keyword smartboards). Of course, the students could write all this down, but this may distract them from the really important information (the explanations of what was written).

Otherwise you should at least allow it. I found it easier and more pleasant to create the notes on the PC and then to process them later (for example in the form of digital flash cards [Anki] or in summaries of modules). The corresponding notes can then also be passed on directly to others.

Another advantage is that mMn transcripts (or also task solutions) by computer are much cleaner than most transcripts by hand.

Wow, thanks for sharing your experience here! This is all very interesting for me, because my school doesn't really rely on digital teaching, for example, but uses traditional and rather old methods - with paper and pen, OHP. In addition, our PC rooms are equipped with rather old-fashioned PCs. There's also the problem that our school Wi-Fi is not quite as stable. That means, when we watch a movie, it just doesn't load or websites don't load at all. I really wish that this changes soon. That probably won't happen anytime soon.

As stated above, I don't care if we use iPads or not. I have nothing against them, but I prefer to use my paper because I can then concentrate better. Sounds strange, doesn't it?

No not at all! I think it would be the same for me if we were allowed to use iPads haha. I notice myself when I'm privately on my cell phone or iPad that I'm easily distracted, especially when I'm supposed to be studying.

I have a few more questions for you:

Where does your private school get so many iPads from? Can you all use the iPads completely free of charge?

Ti

Rather, I have to thank you for really being that interested. Your descriptions would go well with my former elementary school ^^ '

"No, not at all! I think it would be the same for me if we were allowed to use iPads haha. I also notice myself when I'm privately on my cell phone, iPad, that I'm easily distracted, especially when I'm then should actually learn. "
β†’ I'm not better myself. Sketches (drawing program) opens on my screen faster than you can watch xD but otherwise, I could NEVER learn digitally. And I think that this could be due to the radiation. Think I'm stupid or a conspiracy theorist, but that's the only halfway logical explanation for me xD

Since we also have some WLAN problems sometimes, they are currently working on a new fiber optic line next to our school so that there are no problems when several classrooms access the Internet at the same time.

Question 1: I assume you have saved. When I was in eighth or ninth grade, it was rumored that we would soon be able to work with iPads. And then a year or two later the time had come.
Since it is a private school, every household has to pay a certain sum to the school every month, depending on the income. And think about it, if around 500 students pay over 100 euro per month, it quickly comes to plus minus 74,000 euro (I took the normal iPad for 370 euro and calculated it times 200). And since some of them have to pay 350 euro or more, that's pretty quick.

Question 2: Yes! ^^ Of course there are a few rules that we have to follow, but that we have to pay for them is not a law.

Unimaginable today… It was written on the blackboard because paper was too expensive! That had (mMn) interesting consequences!

On the one hand, you couldn't do more homework, or demand, than fit on the front and back, which must have been comparatively little. On the other hand, you could not keep it, or read again what the teacher once said or wrote to!
