Hard disk is no longer recognized, only hums and flashes. What to do?

I ask here on behalf of a friend, because she despairs, which I can understand well. She is an astrophotographer and has all her video footage and images stored on a hard drive. There are nearly 4.7TB in one year! Come together. So it's a 5TB hard drive. Now she explained that to me as follows:

She always has the hard drive on her laptop. One day, the message "USB storage device was improperly removed" appeared on the lower right. Since then, the hard drive is no longer recognized. Cable replaced, laptop replaced, nothing works. When plugged in, the power LED on the hard drive lights up and it hums. This is a bit louder than usual. In Disk Management, this is no longer displayed. No clicking or other noise. 4 different recovery program used and not recognized by anyone.

Then she wanted to have the hard drive professionally restored. They demand 2197 euro from her… But you can buy a used small car! And because I'm interested in technology, I thought I'll help her there. But so far I've only done this with sticks and memory cards. Anyone like an idea like me s.besten on a hard drive? Is that still to save?

an

Whether it helps I do not know but a try is worth it:

Create Linux Live Stick and then boot a computer from it. The hard drive s.besten plug in before turning and see if the hard drive is detected here…

At work that worked for me.

But for the future: Your girlfriend should consider a security concept.
Secure the hard drive to another hard drive once a week. Or buy a NAS with two hard drives that are mirrored?

Bi

If Recuva https://www.ccleaner.com/...com/recuva can't do anything, then use the professional data recovery or simply throw the disk away.

Remove plate, install in other computers, edit with Recuva, if not because the data is not so "there" again…

This is actually still a cheap price for a professional data recovery.

But, because many see Lete quite differently (for whatever reason), God has invented backup.

You just have to use it already.

Co

First, I would take the plate out of the external case and connect directly with SATA, is still nothing nothing can't do much, then only a professional data rescue.

With luck only the SATA / USB controller defect is

In the future she should deal with fail-safe systems and additional backups.

Save irreplaceable data on a single disk and assume that it does not break is really naive.

Ca

Can this work with SATA / USB at all, because external hard drives usually have a separate power supply?

Co

In the external cases is a very ordinary hard drive

Of course, external hard drive have a separate power supply because USB does not supply enough

Ca

And how do you connect a removed external hard drive to power? I found no way.

lo

What should the format of the drive have to do with the external power supply?

Ca

It's about data recovery and not about formatting.

I have an ext. Hard disk, where it suddenly says, if I want to use the hard drive, I have to format it first. But I do not want that, I want my data!

So I tried to connect the removed hard drive via SATA / USB to the PC, but I see no way for the extra power supply.

Co

Are we talking about the same hard drive now?

Between it is not recognized and it wants to be formatted there's a considerable difference

Ca

The question at the top was about data recovery and in my case too.

It was made the proposal, the ext. Remove the hard drive from the case and connect directly to the PC via SATA / USB.

Thereupon I went to the power supply for the ext. HDD asked, because otherwise she does not get enough power.

Well, in the question above, the hard drive is not recognized, and with me it wants to be formatted, but I want my data.

I wanted to try the trick with SATA / USB ever, but as I said, it lacks the power supply.

So we're talking about two hard drives and two different problems.

Since I do not know why my hard drive rumzickt, I try so much.

lo

Ah now yes…

Co

Then please ask your own question, costs nothing and does not cause confusion.

What you have is a fundamentally different problem

Ca

The power supply of the external hard drive would be the same problem. How do you do that?

Ca

Yes, I have a fundamentally different problem, but that should not be an issue here. It was only about the solution SATA / USB, how to implement that… For my actual problem, I ask of course my own question. I'm sorry, I should not have mentioned that. At the moment I can't understand why Peppie brought "formatting" into play.

Co

By installing this hard disk in the computer there are all connections available if you do not have to manage with adapters

Ca

Thanks, I'll take a look!
