I prefer desktops because you can easily upgrade them, replace hard drives, install new graphics cards, etc. You can also connect an external keyboard and monitor to a laptop - and you should do that for serious work, too, to protect your joints and eyes.

I only use laptops for situations in which mobility really matters. Working seriously is limited.
