Second monitor is recognized but does not display anything (windows 7)?

I have a windows 7 laptop and currently need a second screen so I got a monitor! I connected everything with an hdmi cable and selected expand the display, unfortunately my monitor showed absolutely nothing but is recognized by the laptop

any ideas?

Could perhaps be because the "on board" graphics card only supports one screen…
