Play old games on virtual WindowsXP?

I set up a virtual box on my Windows 10 laptop using a Youtube video and installed Windows XP because I want to play a very old game. Unfortunately, the game is not played because "The sound card can't be initialized". So I downloaded a virtual sound card, but I don't know how to get it to run on my XP. Can someone help me?

Ge

Which game?

Al

Disney's Mulan

On

What game is it if you can ask?

It is usually the case that sound cards of the host computer can be activated via the user interface of the program. Programs such as HyperV and Virtual Box should port this option so that they can be found easily.

Al

Disney's Mulan

On

Does the passing on of sound work in general?

Ro

Usually it should be enough to create a "Soundblaster Compatible" for the sound virtually.

Al

Unfortunately I do not know it. How can I test it?

Al

How do I do that?

Ge

That is 22 years old. Still from the time of Win 95/98.
Not even sure if it works under XP.

Does the sound generally run in the VM?

St

Under XP try to install the drivers. I got this from SlimDrivers and it helped. Whether you are - no idea:-(

In the booklet it says that the minimum requirement is Windows 95, but then xp should actually go too… Because of sound: I can't select anything in the settings for sounds and audio devices. Everything is grayed out. Does not suggest that sound is generally reproduced.

Ro

Open Windows XP - Control Panel → Hardware & Sound → Printers & Devices → Device Manager → Audio-Video-Sound → Select driver from list → Soundblaster Compatible.

The "technology" of the operating system has changed fundamentally between WIn95 and XP. It is quite possible that XP will not work.

Al

Unfortunately, I don't have these steps. There's only "printer and other hardware" or "sounds, speech input / output and audio devices" and no device manager.

Ru

If you have Win10:
Have you ever installed the game in compatibility mode for Win XP?

This is quite simple. How, see: https://www.heise.de/...45444.html.
After the compatibility mode is set up, install the program as usual.

Al

@ZaoDaDong then I can still try it out for a long time. Haha…

Al

I tried that, but I couldn't because the program couldn't be started. In no mode: /

On

By trying to play sound on the virtual machine.

Al

Didn't work. In the sound settings, everything is also grayed out and nothing can be changed or clicked.

On

Then your sound adapter is not yet released for the virtual machine. Please take a look at the options of your program.

Ro

Then click on "Printer and other hardware", there on the left in the window on "Hardware", then the hardware assistant should open.

There you click on Next, wait until he has searched, then click on "Hardware has already been connected" if no sound card was found. Further.

Scroll down to the bottom of the list and click on "Add new hardware". Next → Select hardware manually from the list. Further.

Audio / video / game controller.

In the right window: Legacy audio driver. Left = standard devices.

Unfortunately I can't give you a functional guarantee.

Al

Unfortunately it didn't work, but thanks anyway.

Al

I can choose a host audio driver and audio controller in the settings. Audio is activated (both input and output). I have the choice between "Windows DirectSound" and "Null Audio Driver" for the driver and "SoundBlaster 16", "Intel HD Audio" and "ICH AC97" for audio controller. Which one should I choose?

Ro

Take a look at the device manager of your virtual Windows XP to check whether there are any driver problems or unknown devices (yellow question marks).
