Laptop stopped - long shutdown does not work?

My laptop just stopped. This actually happens quite rarely, but otherwise you can just press Off for a long time (so about 5 seconds). But even that doesn't work anymore.

Is the only alternative now to take out the battery or let it go empty or is there something else?

Yep, just take out the battery for a moment.
