Everyone has in common everything up to the editorial part including preparation, but the pressure goes other ways than the purely electronic variant.
Printing → Wood, paper, printing machines, transport, delivery, reading, disposal, ultimately u. A. CO² generation, energy consumption (whatever I may have forgotten here).
Electronic → Internet structure with servers, lines, distribution, load on mobile phones, laptops, …, read, waste disposal, from the disposal of mobile phones at some point apart, ultimately u. A. Again, CO² generation, total energy consumption proportionally (whatever I may have forgotten here).
Are there realistic studies, comparisons? I myself am by no means sure that the electronic version is altogether more favorable, if one considers proportionally the production, the operation etc. Of the involved IT "Krams"
Manufacture of servers and cell phones is more onerous than that of papers. However, the electronics are not bought extra for this concern and will last a long time.
One has cell phones anyway and the lifetime is not shortened much by the use of the news app. And electricity costs for mobile phone charging are one euro per year.
Also the few server requests are only a very small factor.
The result of such a study would be known beforehand.
