Looks like a defective graphics chip. At least that's my experience with such a symptom. Had this twice already (the older dell laptops of the models D630 and D830 with nvidia chip were very susceptible to it) and you can't do anything yourself except to repair it. However, if it's hardly worth it with older models, all that remains is a new purchase.
