Do old laptops use more power?

I have an old VAIO, built in 2007, which still works quite well. Do the old devices need more energy compared to corresponding new laptops or has nothing changed in terms of power consumption?

An

Modern processors and graphics cards generally use less power than older hardware.

Pa

Alot more.

Th

That actually depends more on the model, for example whether a dedicated graphics card is installed or not.

In addition, there are also passive notebooks nowadays that consume less power than conventional fans.

As a comparison: An older i5 2410M has a TDP of 35W, a current i5 103G1 has a TDP of 7.5W to 25W (depending on the configuration), so a little less.

br

It's because of energy efficiency

It doesn't use more electricity, it just doesn't run as efficiently as the newest things, which are replete with so many energy-saving things. Example: The 2007 processor has a 50 watt TDP and can run Minecraft at 30fps. The new 2020 processor has a 40 watt TDP and can play Minecraft at 60fps. However, consumption does not increase over the years.

Old = less power versus more power consumption

New = more power with less power consumption

The technology is even further today. Among other things, it often looks as if the laptop draws more power because the battery quickly runs out. This is due to the battery, which is worn out over the years and can no longer absorb and supply as much electricity as if it were new.

Qu

The computing power per watt is significantly worse with old devices than with new ones. Not that much should be done about electricity consumption. Even back then, compared to today, a battery with a lower energy density was available.

In general, the power consumption of the laptop almost only plays a role for the battery life. A laptop is hardly noticeable in the household (at least if it does not run at maximum performance 24 hours a day). Other consumers have a much greater impact on electricity consumption. (Especially a freezer). If you compare the 25W of a laptop with the 100-200W of a modern LED TV, you will first notice the relations. Other technologies like plasma consume a lot more.

For environmental reasons and financial reasons, there's no reason to change the laptop if it still meets the technical requirements.
